The Quartet
Steve Kaldestad
Originally from Regina Sask, Steve won a scholarship in 1990 from General Motors to study at McGill University, where he studied saxophone with John Nugent, Janis Steprans, and Pat Labarbara. While in Montreal, Steve had the opportunity to play with many Canadian greats, like Ranee Lee, Greg Clayton, Steve Amirault, Bill Coon, Jim Vivien, Mike Murley, Michel Donato, Nelson Symonds. Steve took part in a television recording for the Bravo Network, with Denzal Sinclaire, and recorded for the CBC radio program JazzBeat with singer George Evans. While Steve was in the Montreal Jazz Big Band, they presented a concert with trumpeter Miles Evans playing Porgy and Bess, originally arranged for Miles Davis by his father Gil Evans. Of the many other concert appearances Steve took part in while Montreal, one at the Salle Gesu in 1997 under the direction of composer/conductor Maria Schneider stands out as a highlight. Additionally, in 1999, Steve invited Verve recording artist Kurt Rosenwinkel to perform two gigs with him at Upstairs Jazz Club in Montreal. While taking part in the Big Band program at the Banff Centre of the Arts, he shared the stage with Kenny Wheeler, Hugh Fraser, Maynard Ferguson, Slide Hampton, and Muhal Richard-Abrahms.
In 1997, Steve spent a year in New York, studying saxophone with Lee Konitz, and Mark Turner, before returning to McGill in 1998 to complete his Masters in Jazz Performance in 2000. Upon graduation, Steve relocated to London, England, where he has been living till the present, joining various bands such as the Mike Carr Quartet, the Matt Wates Sextet, the Kate Williams Quartet, and the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, playing all over the United Kingdom, and continental Europe, with highlights being a headline series of gigs at the Guiness Jazz Festival in Cork, Ireland, and a recording in Amsterdam for the famous long-running Dutch radio program, Sessjion. CD recording highlights would be appearing in 1993 as a soloist on Denzal Sinclaire's, "I Waited for You" on Uptown Records, alongside the legendary Jimmy Heath, and pianist Richard Wyands, and also, being selected "CD of the Week" twice by the major UK paper the Observer for both Matt Wates' "the Miller's Tale", and Mike Carr´s "Stephenson's Rocket". Upon moving to Europe, Steve joined Paris-based Manitoban drummer Karl Jannuska´s group, and played at the Marciac Jazz Festival in Gascogny, France in 2005, and has been asked back in 2006. Steve currently leads his own quartet, and maintains a busy schedule of performing at various venues throughout the UK, including the famous Ronnie Scott´s Jazz Club and the Pizza Express, both in Soho, London.
Tilden Webb
Tilden Webb is one of the most in-demand musicians in Canada. He has been featured on over two dozen CD´s alongside such musicians as Ray Brown, Ed Thigpen, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, David Murray, Guido Basso, David Fathead Newman, Pat Labarbara and Dave Young. He has performed with jazz greats Maria Schneider, Mark Turner, Terry Clarke, Conrad Herwig, Ingrid Jensen, Brad Turner, P.J. Perry, Hugh Fraser´s VEJI, Mike Allen, Denzal Sinclaire, Phil Dwyer, Pat LaBarbera, Neil Swainson, and Jerry Fuller among many others. Tilden worked alongside Montreal vocalist Ranee Lee for 7 years, touring with her throughout Canada, the US and Brazil. He has performed in festivals from Vancouver to Halifax from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Tokyo, Japan. Tilden has been heard on countless CBC radio shows and seen on BRAVO.
Tilden was a member of the 1997 "Prix de Jazz" recipient, the Joel Miller Quintet. He has also performed with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and I Musici de Montreal. In 2000, Tilden moved from Montreal to Vancouver where he has become an integral part of the music scene. His first CD as leader, "Cellar Groove" was released in 2005 on the CellarLive label and features David Fathead Newman on saxes and flute. His critically acclaimed group the Tilden Webb Trio, was asked to tour with Fathead in the summer of 2006
Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, Tilden began studying classical piano at the age of 8. His subsequent interest in jazz led him to Montreal in 1988 to study at McGill University. He was a member of the award winning McGill Jazz Ensemble at the age of 17 where he had the opportunity to play with Dave Liebman and Rob McConnell. After receiving his B. Mus., Tilden worked as a freelance musician and then returned to McGill in 1994 where he obtained his M. Mus. in Jazz Piano Performance.
Tilden was an instructor at McGill University and Vanier College CEGEP. He has worked as a clinician at Grant MacEwen Community College, Capilano College, Brandon University, McGill University, and St. Francis Xavier University.
Jesse Cahill
Jesse Cahill is known and respected as one of the foremost drummers on the Vancouver music scene. Born in Victoria in 1975, Jesse started playing drums at 13 and played his first gigs at 15. He studied at the Banff Centre for the Arts in 1993 and 1994 and completed a BMus at McGill University, graduating in 1999 with distinction in Jazz Performance. Influenced by the Jazz and R&B greats of the 1940s, ´50s and ´60s, Jesse has worked with a broad range of outstanding nationally and internationally recognized musicians, from Jazz legends George Coleman, David Fathead Newman, Bobby Shew and PJ Perry to R&B artists like Long John Baldry, Jim Byrnes and Jack Lavin.
Jesse is a popular sideman in demand for studio and live performance and is the first call for many visiting artists. He has been recorded for CBC Jazz Beat, West Coast Performance, as well as live CBC concert broadcasts. His recording resume includes sessions with Phil Dwyer´s Sax Summit, The Brad Turner Quintet, The Jodi Proznick Quartet, Dee Daniels and Cousin Harley. He has performed at many major festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Vancouver Island Music Festival, the Hope Mountain Blues Fest, Festival Vancouver, and many more.
Jesse is also a committed teacher, offering private instruction and clinics on the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. He is a private drum instructor in the Jazz Studies program at Malaspina College in Nanaimo. In 2005 Jesse became a Taye Drums endorser.
