Are you curious about improvisation? Are you an experienced musician and/or educator looking for professional development opportunities? Do you want a chance to collaborate with professional jazz musicians?  We will have something for you at the 2017 VSO Summer Jazz Workshop.

Click here for some fabulous photos from last year.

The program is designed for vocalists and instrumentalists of all ages and levels. The workshop will include topics such as: small and large ensembles, instrumental and vocal masterclasses, arranging, applied theory, group warm up, and embodiment and creativity masterclasses lead by Paula Wise and Dr. Celeste Snowber .

In 2016 we invited Afro-cuban music specialists Jack Duncan (percussion) and Al Johnson (bass) to lead a masterclass in week one and James Danderfer (clarinet/sax) to lead a masterclass on traditional New Orleans jazz in week two. This year we have invited Sal Ferreras to lead us in Brazilian Rhythms and John Stetch to share his creative arrangements.

We also have introduced a workshop for younger musicians age 10 to 14 called Jazz it Up! The wonderful musician and music educator Bill Clark will be leading the musical adventure.

There will be a jam session and faculty concert every day, a jazz club listening experience at Frankie's Jazz Club or Tangent Cafe with the faculty and teaching assistant team and a final performance in beautiful Pyatt Hall on the Friday night of each week.

Our amazing group of instructors include award winning musicians such as Bill Coon (arranging, guitar), Jodi Proznick (bass, theory, artistic director),  Steve Kaldestad (woodwinds, large ensemble), Miles Black (piano, theory) , Steve Maddock (jazz vocals, vocal improvisation), Jesse Cahill (drums), Rod Murray (week one) and Kent Wallace (week two) (brass) and Kelly Proznick (vocal jazz ensemble, morning warm-up).

There will also be a wonderful group of university students and professionals working with us as teaching assistants to ensure quality playing opportunities for all.

The two sessions run from  July 18 to 22 and July 25 to 29.

The program will be held in the state-of-the-art music school attached to the Orpheum in beautiful downtown Vancouver.
