Waking from the deep sleep of winter the Ostara Project is a beautiful musical collaboration featuring the compositions and talents of several outstanding musicians, celebrating rebirth and renewal, as our spring cycle of growth begins anew. Each member of the ensemble has given their reverence to explore their personal musical heritage and identity as a Canadian Settler and citizen, embarking on new projects and sounds to bring light to the creativity, experiences, and talents of Canadian women in Jazz.
In a genre and industry where women have been severely underrepresented, the Ostara Project is a beautiful example of perseverance, community, and a deep love for music. New growth rises out of darkness, stretching for new life, propelled by hope. This is the music of Ostara.

Ostara, the Germanic goddess of the spring equinox, is the ideal icon for a group of powerfully creative Canadian female jazz musicians. The equinox marks a point of perfect balance: for a moment, the world is poised between day and night, light and dark. In spring, that moment tumbles into a season of promise and growth and it is that hope of rebirth and rejuvenation that has inspired The Ostara Project.
Co-led by award-winning bassist Jodi Proznick and pianist Amanda Tosoff, The Ostara Project showcases the strength and creativity of Canadian women in jazz. Membership is fluid: a core group provides continuity while the roster changes from project to project in order to showcase the creativity of a wide spectrum of artists, all top-tier musicians, composers and bandleaders who reflect the geographical, cultural and creative diversity of Canada’s musical landscape.
Nominated for a 2023 Juno award, Ostara’s self-titled debut album (Cellar Live, November 2022) features the compositions and talents of seven outstanding musicians who collectively hold nine JUNO nominations and three JUNO awards. This first iteration of Ostara features Joanna Majoko (vocals), Rachel Therrien (trumpet), Allison Au (alto sax), Jocelyn Gould (guitar), Sanah Kadoura (drums) and Tosoff and Proznick on piano and bass, respectively.
In a genre and industry where women have been severely underrepresented, the Ostara Project is a beautiful example of perseverance, community, and a deep love for the music. New growth rising out of darkness, stretching for new life, propelled by hope. This is the music of Ostara.

For Canadians, the arrival of spring is momentous: the scent of air is fresh and full of possibility as tender green shoots reach up towards the light and the cycle of growth, rebirth, and renewal begins again. It’s an apt theme for a musical collaboration named after Ostara, the Germanic goddess of the spring equinox. The Ostara Project, spear-headed by award-winning jazz musicians Jodi Proznick and Amanda Tosoff of Music Arts Collective, showcases the strength and creativity of Canadian women in jazz. Membership is fluid and what remains constant is that Ostara artists are all top-tier musicians, composers and bandleaders who reflect the geographical, cultural and creative diversity of Canada’s musical landscape.
In a genre and industry where women have been severely underrepresented, the Ostara Project is a beautiful example of perseverance, community, and a deep love for the music. New growth rising out of darkness, stretching for new life, propelled by hope. This is the music of Ostara.
Tickets are $15 for the general public, and FREE for currently enrolled VSOSoM students. If you are eligible for free tickets, you will receive an email with a code to reserve your place.

An estimated five percent of jazz instrumentalists are women. In February 2022, Canadian bassist Jodi Proznick (JUNO nomination 2007, 2018) and pianist Amanda Tosoff (JUNO nomination 2022) decided to challenge the almost-exclusive male narrative by bringing together seven outstanding Canadian female jazz musicians, each one a composer and bandleader in her own right. The group recorded a self-titled album: seven compositions, one contributed by each member. The playing is powerful and the message is clear: these musicians have something to say, and they are creating the space where their voices will be heard. ArtSpring is so proud to be presenting The Ostara Project on International Women’s Day. Membership in The Ostara Project is fluid. A core group provides continuity and additional guests are invited, creating the opportunity to amplify the voices of more women, including new rising female stars. Come meet the new Canadian super group of award-winning female jazz musicians.
Jodi Proznick – composer/bassist | Amanda Tosoff – composer/pianist | Allison Au – composer /saxophonist | Rachel Therrien – composer/trumpet | Virginia Macdonald – composer/clarinet | Valérie Lacombe – composer/drums | Laila Biali – vocalist.
