Jodi Proznick Trio
Jodi Proznick bass ♦ Bill Coon guitar ♦ James Danderfer clarinet/sax
Jasmine Jazz features three musicians of the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble with some of Vancouver’s finest jazz artists led by Juno-nominated bassist and composer, Jodi Proznick.
Don’t miss the unique and beautiful confluence of Asian and Jazz instruments in concert - Jirong Huang (erhu), Sarah Yusha Tan (guzheng) and Zhongxi Wu (suona) performing with Proznick (bass), Bill Coon (guitar), James Danderfer (clarinet/sax) and special guest Liam MacDonald (percussion)
Jazz will be interpreted through traditional Chinese instruments; traditional and contemporary Chinese music will be given a new life through jazz. According to Proznick “The afternoon will be all about musical conversations, an east meets west experience, full of beauty, harmony, mutual respect and interplay. The repertoire will be a beautiful mix of songs pulled from jazz repertoire, traditional Chinese folk music and original composition.” Repertoire will include Chinese classics “Jasmine Flower” and “Shanghai Night”, the contemporary Taiwanese song “Moon Represents My Heart” and a selection of jazz standards such as McCoy Tyner’s “Contemplation”, Billy Strayhorn’s “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing” and Freddie Hubbard’s “Little Sunflower”.
The six musicians of Jasmine Jazz will be recording its first album at the Warehouse Studio in the week following the Jazz Fest concert. Watch for the recording to be released in Winter 2023.

SGaanaGwa integrates ancient Haida knowledge and oral traditions and draws upon the magic that occurs in both traditional potlatches and jazz improvisation, which they bring to their live performances. Their concerts are an invitation to explore new territories, to share music, knowledge and sounds that summon feelings and images that flow from the Supernatural landscape.
A driving force of the band is to propel the conversation about past and future, history and legacy, and the human experience of the Supernatural Realm around us. “We want to connect people of different backgrounds, to help bridge cultures, and to have some fun on the way”.Terri-Lynn has made it her life’s work and passion to preserve Haida music and culture. Grizzly Bear Town is Terri-Lynn’s third album in the endangered Haida language, and is a collaborative creation with Bill Henderson and Claire Lawrence. Some of the album was filmed and recorded in Haida Gwaii and is evocative of the spirit of primordial Haida Gwaii. SGaanaGwa is a Haida word, that means supernatural, or supernatural being, or powerful.
