Join us at Performance Works (Granville Island) for a special double-bill featuring Raagaverse and Gamelan Bike Bike! The evening features new music for gamelan under the direction of I Putu Swaryandana Ichi Oka, plus new music for ‘gendér wayang’ featuring the quartet Gamelan Kembang Telang. Raagaverse, spearheaded by Shruti Ramani, interweaves Hindustani classical traditions, modern jazz, and poetry, centering the influence of Raagas to conjure imagery of a universe full of modal melodies and jazz harmonies.
Doors at 7:00. Performance at 8:00pm.
About the Artists
Raagaverse is an exciting Indo-Jazz fusion project spearheaded by Shruti Ramani (voice) in a collaboration with the award-winning Jodi Proznick (bass), the supremely talented Noah Franche-Nolan (piano, Nord), and the fiery Nicholas Bracewell (drums). Raagaverse’s music melds ancient and rich Hindustani melodies with dense and dynamic Jazz harmonies. Lyrics in Raagaverse’s music tell stories of love, grief, longing, and a sense of being at home.
Gamelan Bike Bike draws its musical inspiration from Bali, Indonesia and its raw materials from the scrap metal bins of Vancouver. Founded as a community-based project, the ensemble brings together a diverse group of artists to materialize and animate new experimental instruments. They transformed over 100 discarded bicycle frames, along with other scrap metals, into a range of tuned metallophones and gongs that form the foundation of their sound. The ensemble is dedicated to performing new music for gamelan, including compositions from guest composers I Putu Gede Sukaryana (Balot) and I Putu Swaryandana Ichi Oka from Bali. In 2017 the group released Hi-Ten, an album of original works with the Indonesia-based label Insitu Recordings and is currently preparing their next album. Gamelan Bike Bike is currently based at the Hadden Park Fieldhouse as part of the Publik Secrets fieldhouse residency with the Vancouver Park Board and regularly offers workshops and performances to the community.
“Gamelan Bike Bike has proved to be a fertile environment for cross-cultural artistic innovation, presenting Indonesian music from a uniquely Vancouver perspective” (Jakarta Post)
