Event Details
Join JUNO-nominated & Lieutenant Governor award recipient Jodi Proznick (bass), along with industry professionals Shruti Ramani (voice), Ingrid Stitt (saxophone) & Jamie Lee (drums), to explore jazz for a day in a welcoming and non-judgmental environment. Become immersed in the rhythms, improvisation, composition, and learn about the women who’ve brought magnificence to this popular genre of music.
We will celebrate and encourage girls, women, trans women and non-binary music lovers in a supportive space with jam sessions, workshops, mentoring, and an afternoon performance at 3pm. The concert is free and open to the public. Make your voice heard in conversations designed for students, teachers and beginner/intermediate level musicians of any age. If you have 2+ years’ experience on vocals or an instrument—or just a curiosity about the nuts and bolts of jazz music—then this event is for you! You will take away at the end of the day:
- An understanding of how a jazz lead sheet works
- Methodical and fun ways to practice improvisation
- Basics on how to write a jazz composition
- A short survey of important women in jazz such as Mary Lou Williams, Billie Holiday, Renee Rosnes and Maria Schneider
- A new community of musical collaborators
- Confidence and empowerment to do the creative work you have always wanted
- Professional tips for teachers to teach creative music play in your classrooms and ideas to implement in your jazz bands
